Uses and scope
These are current alphabetic distinctions. Turkish dotted İ pairs with i, while dotless I pairs with ı. The dot already present in ordinary lowercase i is part of that letter's glyph, not a separately stored combining character. Unicode's names list also records an old IPA palatalization use explicitly withdrawn in 1976; it should not be advertised as a current IPA recommendation. [27], [44], [33], [4]
Similar shapes, different characters
Do not replace ż with ź or confuse ė with ę. A full stop placed after a letter is punctuation, not dot above. Removing a separately encoded dot from İ is a text transformation, not a complete Turkish casing algorithm. The spacing dot ˙ can display the sign but does not attach like U+0307.
