Alt Codes for Accent Letters
A Windows Alt code enters a character by holding Alt while typing a number on a numeric keypad. The number belongs to an input method and code page; it is not automatically a Unicode code point.
Leading-zero Windows codes
The Windows values below come from the pinned Microsoft CP1252 mapping. Hold Alt, enter all four digits on the numeric keypad, including the initial zero, then release Alt. For example, é is mapped to byte 233, entered as Alt+0233.
These shortcuts require a compatible Western code-page configuration and application. Number-row keys are not a replacement for the numeric keypad, and some keyboards have no keypad. If a shortcut produces a different result, copy the character or use Character Map.
Legacy input without a leading zero uses a different OEM code-page system and can vary by configuration. We do not publish OEM codes: this project has no separately pinned and verified OEM dataset. Neither system provides a universal shortcut for every Unicode character. Microsoft explains the OEM and leading-zero distinction.
Word and classic Outlook: hexadecimal Alt+X
In Word for Windows, type the Unicode hexadecimal value, select those digits, and press Alt+X. For example, select 00E9 and press Alt+X to make é. Selecting the digits prevents adjacent hexadecimal letters from being included.
Classic Outlook for Windows supports this in its message editor. Do not assume the method works in new Outlook, web editors or every application. Alt+X is a hexadecimal conversion command, not Windows numeric-keypad Alt input.

Use the character buttons to copy. On narrow screens, focus the table area and use arrow keys to scroll horizontally. Each method column identifies its source and supported availability.
Choose a reference character to copy it.

When a Windows Alt code is unavailable
These characters have no entry in the supported CP1252 mapping. Their Unicode decimal values must not be substituted for Windows Alt codes. Copy them or use hexadecimal Alt+X in a supported editor.
- Ệ (U+1EC6): Alt code unavailable. Word / classic Outlook: 1EC6 then Alt+X.
- ắ (U+1EAF): Alt code unavailable. Word / classic Outlook: 1EAF then Alt+X.
- ộ (U+1ED9): Alt code unavailable. Word / classic Outlook: 1ED9 then Alt+X.
