Caron or háček: č, ř, š and ž

Uses and scope

Czech ř and Slovak ľ are examples of caron letters. Croatian and Slovenian use č, š and ž, while Latvian and Lithuanian also include caron consonants. Pinyin uses a caron on the tone-bearing vowel for the third tone. Those current spelling and tone roles should not be conflated. [28], [30], [35], [36], [43], [44], [48], [49], [3]

Similar shapes, different characters

A breve is curved rather than angular, and a circumflex points the opposite way. Do not type an apostrophe after d to imitate ď. The spacing caron ˇ does not combine with a preceding base in the same way as U+030C. Search the table by code point when the font makes the shape uncertain.
