Uses and scope
The tilde overlay has a phonetic use for velarization or pharyngealization in the Unicode annotations. Strokes and slashes also occur in independently encoded letters such as Polish ł and Scandinavian ø. Their appearance does not prove a canonical relationship to a plain letter plus one of these overlays. [4], [27], [37], [38]
Similar shapes, different characters
Ł and ø do not canonically decompose into l or o plus a stroke. By contrast, some symbols have explicit overlay decompositions in Unicode. A mark-removal tool must follow the data rather than guess from glyph shape. Applying strikethrough formatting changes presentation, not the stored scalar sequence. [1], [2], [4], [27], [37], [38]

- Properties use Unicode 17.0.0. Normalization follows UAX #15; grapheme boundaries follow UAX #29. Script associations describe encoded properties, not language use.

- CLDR 48.2and the IANA registry dated 2026-08-08. Main and auxiliary exemplars are distinct. CLDR exemplars are not complete orthographies.
