Uses and scope
A Vietnamese vowel can carry the hook together with a shape mark: ẩ contains a circumflex and hook above, while ở contains a horn and hook above. The tone's phonetic realization varies by dialect, so the sign is identified here by its tone category rather than a universal pitch drawing. [45], [3], [4]
Similar shapes, different characters
Horn U+031B changes the vowel shape in ơ and ư; hook above is a tone mark. They cannot replace each other. A question mark, apostrophe or combining comma above is a different encoded character even if part of its glyph looks like a hook. There is no spacing hook-above equivalent claimed by this table.
