Russian stress marks, ё and й

Spelling and status

Ё and й are alphabet letters rather than optional acute stress annotations. This collection separates those letters from a set of vowel-plus-acute sequences. Gramota's spelling guidance discusses selective stress marking; a copy table cannot locate the stress in an unfamiliar Russian word. [46], [9], [3]

Distinctions to preserve

Use Cyrillic letters for Russian. Latin e and Cyrillic е may look alike but have different code points. Й canonically decomposes to Cyrillic и plus breve. A stressed vowel often remains a multi-character sequence after NFC, and no universal Alt code represents every such sequence. [46], [9], [3], [1], [2]
