Spelling and status
The Romanian Academy lists these within its 31-letter alphabet. Breve distinguishes ă, circumflex distinguishes â and î, and comma below distinguishes ș and ț. The choice between â and î follows spelling rules; visual similarity is not enough to select a replacement. [31], [3]
Distinctions to preserve
Unicode assigns different code points to ș and ş, and normalization does not merge them. Older documents may contain cedilla substitutes because of earlier implementation limitations. Correcting those requires a deliberate, language-aware edit rather than a claim that the strings were already equivalent. [31], [3], [1], [2]
