Portuguese spelling uses acute and circumflex accents, the grave accent in à and related contractions, tilde in ã and õ, and cedilla in ç. Each has a spelling role; they are not freely exchangeable accent styles. [23]

Spelling and status
The orthographic agreement abolished ordinary Portuguese diaeresis spellings. It preserves the mark in foreign proper names and their derivatives, such as mülleriano. Regional and lexical spelling choices still matter, so a character picker cannot decide whether a particular word needs an acute or a circumflex. [23]
Distinctions to preserve
Do not remove the tilde from ã or õ as if it were optional emphasis. Ç is a precomposed c with cedilla. The grave accent is different from a straight apostrophe, even when a keyboard places them nearby. Historical trema examples should not be presented as today's ordinary inventory. [23], [1], [2]
