Spelling and status

The Norwegian language council discusses both international substitutions for æ, ø and å and the use of acute, grave and circumflex accents. Those substitutions are practical replacements in constrained systems, not a statement that the original letters are identical to ae, o or aa. [38], [39], [9]

Distinctions to preserve

Preserve an accent where the spelling requires it, and consult the relevant dictionary when it is optional. Æ and ø have no canonical decomposition into ordinary letters plus marks. The optional forms in this collection are copying aids rather than instructions to accent every matching vowel. [38], [39], [9], [1], [2]

Sources and method

Usage statements link to the authority that supports their scope. Character names, categories, combining classes and normalization results come from the pinned Unicode data. A canonical decomposition does not establish language membership or spelling frequency.

Review and limitations
The dataset is derived from the sources above. Editorial guides cite additional scoped authorities. No native or specialist orthography approval is implied. Release scope date: 14 September 2026. Historic or specialist usage needs separate evidence. Registry-only records have unknown orthography in this release.
