Hebrew niqqud supplies vowel points to the consonantal writing system. Much ordinary Hebrew is unpointed; learning material and other texts can include fuller pointing. The points are not ordinary alphabet letters. [5]

Spelling and status

Dagesh and the shin and sin dots are related marks with different functions from the vowel points. Cantillation signs form another layer and are outside this compact collection. Hebrew has no uppercase/lowercase system, and the presence of a point does not create a capital or small-letter pair. [5]

Distinctions to preserve

Store a combining point after its base letter in logical order. Shin dot and sin dot are distinct code points even though each looks like a dot above a different side of ש. Qamats and qamats qatan are separately encoded too. A font's similar glyphs do not establish that their strings are interchangeable. [5], [1], [2]

Encoded properties
Properties use Unicode 17.0.0. Normalization follows UAX #15; grapheme boundaries follow UAX #29. Script associations describe encoded properties, not language use.

Review and limitations
The dataset is derived from the sources above. Editorial guides cite additional scoped authorities. No native or specialist orthography approval is implied. Release scope date: 14 September 2026. Historic or specialist usage needs separate evidence. Registry-only records have unknown orthography in this release.
