Spelling and status
The Institute for the Languages of Finland explains the alphabet and these additional spelling needs. A Finnish character reference should therefore include å, š and ž without implying that they occur as frequently as ä and ö in ordinary Finnish words. [41]
Distinctions to preserve
Do not drop the dots in ä or ö as if they were optional stress marks. A caron in š is a different mark from an acute or a circumflex. When preserving a foreign name, use its required spelling rather than forcing every character into the most common Finnish subset. [41], [1], [2]
