Croatian's distinctive Latin letters are č, ć, đ, š and ž. Č and ć are separate letters, so a caron and an acute cannot be swapped as stylistic alternatives. [35]

Spelling and status
The Croatian alphabet also includes the digraphs dž, lj and nj. Their alphabetic status differs from their storage as character sequences. This reference shows the five single letters together and includes a digraph example without presenting it as a combining mark. [35]
Distinctions to preserve
Đ has a stroke but is not canonically equivalent to D followed by an overlay. A broad mark-removal operation therefore need not convert đ into d. Keep the distinction between Croatian đ and Icelandic ð, which is a different encoded letter with a different history and use. [35], [1], [2]
