Arabic harakat are vowel signs added to letters. They are often omitted in ordinary text and appear more fully in learning, religious and other carefully vocalized material. They are not additional alphabet letters. [5]

Spelling and status
Fatha, damma and kasra are short-vowel marks; their doubled counterparts encode tanwin. Shadda marks consonant doubling, while sukun marks the absence of a vowel in this notation. Superscript alef is included as a related sign rather than another basic short vowel. Arabic has no uppercase/lowercase case distinction. [5]
Distinctions to preserve
A mark follows its base in logical storage even though the text is displayed right to left. Several marks can belong to one base, and canonical ordering can differ from the order in which a user typed them. The dots that distinguish many Arabic letters must not be confused with optional harakat or removed as if all visible dots were separate characters. [5], [1], [2]
